I have had the honor to receive your communication of July 3d, and with it the Gold medal voted by a joint Resolution of Congress as a testimonial of my services in the reduction of Monterey. I beg leave to express my deep sense of the distinguished honor which the Houses of congress have seen fit to confer upon me by the presentation of this medal, an honor which is enhanced by its reception at the hands of the chief magistrate of the Republic.
